Overview

A flow sends messages on its own when a subscriber does something, such as signing up. Flows can send an iMessage to iPhone subscribers and a text message to everyone else. This guide takes you through your first flows in the order most businesses set them up.

Get Started

Step 1: Start from a template

Go to Flows > Popular Templates. Each template comes with its trigger and messages ready to edit. Click Use template to open one in the builder.

  • Welcome: Starts when someone new subscribes.

  • Abandoned cart: Starts when a shopper adds to cart but does not check out.

  • Post-Purchase: Starts when a customer places an order.

  • Browse abandonment: Starts when someone views products without buying.

  • Win back: Starts when a subscriber has not ordered in the last 90 days.

Step 2: Turn on your welcome flow

The welcome flow greets each new subscriber once, the first time they subscribe. Edit the messages, click Save, then click Set as Live.

Step 3: Build your own flow

Go to Flows > New flow and click Create a custom flow. In the Flow trigger panel, choose a Trigger category, Ecommerce or General, and a Trigger event. Then add steps such as Send Text Message, Wait and Branch.

  • Ecommerce: Shopping and subscriber events, such as New subscriber, Birthday and Placed an order.

  • General: Events that need no online store, such as Subscriber added to Manual Segment, Keyword Opt-In, Inbound Message, Date and Time and Webhook.

Step 4: Check how your flows perform

On the Flows page, click the three dots on a flow's row, then click Analytics. The report shows how many people entered the flow, what happened to their messages, and the orders and revenue it earned.

Helpful Information

  • Flow messages wait for your Quiet Hours to end before they send.

  • Subscribers you import do not start the welcome flow.

  • Cobalt scans your messages when you set a flow live. If one fails the scan, the flow stays a draft.

Shopify stores: Abandoned cart, Abandoned checkout, Viewed a product, Visited your site, Placed an order and Win back start from activity in your connected Shopify store, so the Abandoned cart, Post-Purchase, Browse abandonment and Win back templates need one. Sign-Up Opt-In starts when someone subscribes through one of your popups, which show on your Shopify storefront.
