Overview

Moving to Cobalt from another SMS provider means bringing over your subscriber list and setting up your automations, keywords and signup forms again. This guide takes you through each part in the order that works best.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our support team so we can assist you with the migration.

Get Started

Step 1: Get your account approved

Cobalt reviews your business and sets up your own phone numbers: an iMessage number and a standard SMS number. You can import your list and build your flows and keywords while you wait.

Step 2: Import your subscribers

Export your list from your old provider as a CSV file, then go to Subscribers > Import Subscribers. On the Compliance step, choose your old provider as the SMS Provider, for example Attentive, Postscript or Klaviyo, or choose Other.

Important: Remove anyone who opted out with your old provider before you import.

Step 3: Rebuild your flows

Go to Flows > Popular Templates for ready-made flows such as Welcome, or build your own. Subscribers you import do not start the welcome flow, so it only greets people who join after the switch.

Step 4: Recreate your keywords

Every account already has JOIN, which subscribes anyone who texts it. Add your other keywords under Tools > Keywords. They send an auto response and add people to segments.

Step 5: Replace your signup forms

Swap the signup forms from your old provider for Cobalt web forms, so new subscribers join Cobalt directly. A web form can be turned on once your toll-free or 10DLC number is approved.

Step 6: Connect Integrations such as Klaviyo

Cobalt supports modern brands with integrations into providers such as: Klaviyo, Gorgias, Recharge, Stay, Triple Whale and more. These integrations ensure your data is constantly in sync, and new features automatically push updates where applicable.

For example, if you use Klaviyo, connect it from Integrations to use your Klaviyo lists and segments as audiences in Cobalt.

Helpful Information

  • People with no opted in date in your file are added as Pending and cannot receive messages until they opt in.

  • Klaviyo lists and segments only include people who are already your Cobalt subscribers, so import your list first.

Shopify stores: Install Cobalt from the Shopify App Store first, as described in Install Cobalt on Your Shopify Store. Then replace your old popups with Cobalt popups (see Create a Popup) and rebuild your abandoned cart flow (see Set Up an Abandoned Cart Flow).
