Overview

A manual segment is a fixed group of people you build by uploading a CSV file. It only changes when you upload another file. Cobalt matches people by phone number, so anyone already on your list is added to the segment.

Get Started

1. Go to Segments and click Create Segment.

2. In the Create a Segment window, click Upload CSV under Manual Upload.

3. Enter a Segment name, then drag your CSV into the box or click to browse. CSV files only, up to 10MB. To see the format, click download the sample template.

  • Phone: Required.

  • Email, First Name and Last Name: Optional.

  • Country: Optional for numbers that start with +1. Enter US for numbers written with 10 digits.

4. Under Map your columns, check that each menu points at the right column. Check the consent box, then click Import Subscribers.

5. Cobalt takes you back to Segments. A Segment Import banner shows while it works, then says how many people were added, for example "2 subscribers added, 1 already in this segment". The new segment is listed as Manual.

Important: People whose phone number was not already on your list are added as Pending. They count toward the segment's size, but they do not receive messages until they opt in.

What happens next

Open the segment to see its Import results. To add more people later, click Import Subscribers on that page. Nobody is removed from the segment. Use the segment as the audience when you create a campaign.

  • Imported: People whose number was not on your list.

  • Already existed: People already on your list. Cobalt updates their name or email if your file has a different one.

Troubleshooting

"We are unable to import your subscriber list because row 3 contains incorrect information, please check and re-upload." This means a phone number in that row cannot be used. The row number counts the header as row 1. Fix your file and choose it again.

"We couldn't finish this import. Check the file and try again." Upload the file again. If it keeps failing, contact support.
