Overview

A segment is a group of subscribers. Segments let you send a campaign to the right people instead of your whole list, and start or organize flows. All of your segments are on the Segments page, with each segment's type, number of subscribers and when it last updated.

Dynamic and manual segments

When you click Create Segment, you choose one of two types.

  • Dynamic: A group of subscribers who match conditions you set, such as Phone Type is iPhone, or an opt-in date in the last 30 days. It updates on its own as subscribers start or stop matching. See Create a Dynamic Segment.

  • Manual: A fixed group of people you upload in a CSV file. It changes only when people are added, for example when you upload another file or use Add to segment on a subscriber's profile. See Import Subscribers into a Manual Segment.

Every new account starts with one dynamic segment, iPhone Subscribers, which groups everyone whose phone type is iPhone.

Segments from your integrations

Klaviyo lists and segments you turn on under Integrations > Klaviyo appear on the Segments page with a Klaviyo label next to their name. They refresh every 6 hours.

Synced segments are read-only in Cobalt. They only include people who are already your subscribers, matched by phone number. To change who is in one, change it in the app it came from.

Where you use segments

  • Campaigns: Choose a segment as the audience when you create a campaign, or choose Send Message from the segment's row menu.

  • Flows: The Subscriber added to Manual Segment trigger starts a flow when someone joins a manual segment, and the Assign to segment step adds people to one.

  • Keywords and web forms: Add the people who text a keyword or submit a web form to a manual segment.

Helpful Information

A segment cannot be deleted while a campaign that has not been sent, a flow, an enabled keyword or a web form still uses it. Remove it from those first.

Shopify stores: Click Sync Shopify Segments on the Segments page to bring in your Shopify customer segments. They show a Shopify label, refresh daily and follow the same rules as other synced segments. The button only shows when a Shopify store is connected.
