Overview
Merge tags are placeholders in your message, such as {first_name}. When the campaign sends, Cobalt replaces each tag with that subscriber's details.
Get Started
1. Go to Campaigns > New campaign. In Step 2 · Message, click Personalize to open the Merge tags menu.
2. Click a tag to add it where your cursor is in the message:
{first_name}: The subscriber's first name. Cobalt sends "there" if it has no name for them.
{last_name}: Their last name. It is blank when Cobalt has only one name for them.
{shop_name}: Your Company name from Account Settings.
{store_link}: A link to your website. Cobalt shortens it and tracks clicks.
{discount_code}: A code from the reward you choose in the next step.
3. If you added {discount_code}, a Reward section appears under your message.
Choose a reward from the list:
Same code for everyone: every subscriber gets the same code.
Unique code per subscriber: Cobalt creates a new code for each text.
Unique codes from your upload: each text uses the next code from the list you uploaded.
4. Check the Live Preview, which shows sample values such as Joe for {first_name}. {discount_code} stays as typed because the code is added when the message sends.
What happens next
When the campaign sends, Cobalt replaces the tags in each subscriber's text. If Cobalt cannot get a code for a subscriber, that text sends with the code left blank.
Helpful Information
With no reward yet, {discount_code} shows Needs a reward in the menu, with a Create a reward link to the Rewards page.
Store credit rewards are not offered, because they issue credit after an order instead of a code.
{store_link} uses the website you enter in Account Settings > Account > General > Company Domain. If it is empty, the tag sends blank.
A campaign has no product, so {product_name} sends blank and {product_link} sends the same link as {store_link}. Leave both out.
Shopify stores: Dynamic discount code and Shared discount code rewards are created in your connected Shopify store. Manual upload rewards work without one.
