Overview
This glossary explains the words you will see most often in Cobalt.
Subscriber: A person who has opted in to receive texts from you. Their profile is on the Subscribers page.
Opt-in and opt-out: Opting in means a person agreed to hear from you. Opting out means they asked you to stop, for example by texting STOP. If they texted STOP, only they can opt back in, by texting JOIN.
Keyword: A word someone can text to your number to subscribe or to receive automated information such as your hours of operation or shipping policies.
Segment: A group of subscribers you use as an audience in campaigns and flows. A dynamic segment updates itself as people start or stop matching your rules. A manual segment is a list you add people to. See Create a Dynamic Segment.
Campaign: A one-time message sent to all your subscribers or to a segment. See Create and Send a Campaign.
Flow: Automated messaging triggered by what a subscriber does.
Conversation: A message thread with one subscriber, where you read and answer replies.
iMessage: Apple's messaging service, used for iPhone subscribers in flows and conversations. SMS is the standard text message and MMS is a text with a picture.
10DLC: A 10-digit phone number with a higher allowed messaging volume. US carriers verify your business before it can send messages.
Toll-Free: A number with an area code such as 800, 888, 877 or 866, widely used for customer service and marketing. It is verified by the carriers too.
Quiet hours: Hours when Cobalt holds your triggered messages instead of sending them. The default is 8pm to 9am, and you can turn on quiet hours by state in Settings > Messaging.
Smart sending: A limit that keeps campaigns from reaching the same subscriber too often. When Smart sending is on for a campaign, anyone over the limit is skipped. The default is 1 campaign message every 8 hours, which you can change in Settings > Messaging.
Attribution: How Cobalt takes credit for purchases after a message. The View window is how long it stays credited when a subscriber got a text but did not click. The Click window is how long when they clicked a link. The defaults are 24 hours and 7 days, which you can change in Settings > Messaging.
